March 9, 2012Golf season is starting as we speak. All golfers wonder if they are going to have a better swing this year...?
In order to warm up for a few golf paintings, I used a divided sheet to make these small impressions/sketches.. some of them work, and some of them don't...
Robert Wade has this great tip on how to use a divided sheet to sharpen your painting skills.

Spring is around the corner but, cold, cold february inspired to do this watercolor. Can't believe I skated downtown on this river, below the bridge, only a few weeks ago...

Dutch Art Magazine Palet just came out with an article that I wrote on atmospheric perspective.. Describing this phenomenon using six of my works, a number of landscape watercolors and oils.
Writing such an article is a great way to check your own theories and ideas about such a topic. You really have to find the right words to express what comes often natural.

Over the past months I've worked on a number of oils on panel. They all represent a fairly romantic and stilled view of various landscapes; urban, ocean, rural... I couldn't resist them.

This oil presents the 'horse' of Marken as it is called - het paard van Marken... the lighthouse just outside the ocean side village of Marken. The building is a great landmark in white and poses a nice subject against all sorts of different skies.

Foggy Bridges in Haarlem... River fog happens so now and then. The ocean is close by and pushes the fog into the city. Fantastic atmosphere during the earlier morning hours is the result.

Around this time of the year the canals in Amsterdam have this winterlook.... All trees have no leaves for a few months and it shows canal houses and other buildings so much better. The amstel river goes 'naked' so to speak... it shows the well known gable ends.
I also found an older drawing of the boats under the mill - in Haarlem. Sometimes a drawing is all it needs. Just pencil and paper... it always feels like going back to the basics.. By the way, its also a great confidence booster for your next painting!

Found some old sketches and photographs from my trip to Arizona.... Loved it! Taking the rental car to the Grand Canyon and sketch, paint and take as much in as possible.. It is amazing when you see those sketches again... memories can be so vivid.
To honour this great trip I made these two half sheet impressions of the South Rim.
Really enjoyed painting it... not much drawing, just let the watercolor paint flow & go!

The days are short... and the shadows are long... so is the winter. I've added a few more watercolors that I've made recently. I like the one below because it is such a simple subject and the watercolor is so effective in caputuring this last light reflection in the polder.

Summer is coming to an end... but I spend it wisely! I visited Florence, Italy... had an apartment for a month and took trips into tuscany... enjoyed some good food, wine and off course, great outdoor painting!
Italian WATERCOLORS & New OILS
I've added a few watercolors that I made during this trip. I painted these on site, what always seems to free up my brush stroke after studio time during a long winter. Check out this city wall drop off... interesting painting spot... to say the least..!
During this time in Florence I also had the opportunity to attend a workshop at the Angel Art Academy. Painted still life in oils... something completely different from painting watercolors on site. It was a great experience, learned a lot ... and met some great people from all over the globe! Great academy... very solid teaching in a friendly atmosphere.

I received great news from China! One of my watercolor paintings was juried into the Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolour Biennial Exhibition 2010.
The painting will be exhibited from april - october 2010 at the SHANGHAI QUANHUA Gallery.
The painting selected for the exhibit shows sunny Amsterdam on a busy afternoon, close to central station.. Check it out among the other watercolor works.
I'm thrilled to be part of such a great international watermedia event and be selected to show one of my works which will be displayed among great international artists.
