Lightweight
Watercolor
Easel
I designed a
lightweight watercolor easel that can be carried around town and
country without feeling that you are
moving furniture... Check things and consider may be building one yourself.... I've used it extensively during this past summer and it felt as comfortable as carrying an average daytrip backpack!
The picture below shows the easel in full glory... It has the following features:
a. tripod connection for any regular photo tripod that you might have (you don't? buy a light one, it makes the whole

experience even better... there is no
sense in having a light easel and
a heavy tripod!)
b.
it has a detachable palettte tray which can be
clamped onto the easel for your convenience. Off course you can
hand hold your palette if you wish (and use the tray to place your refreshments..)
c. brush holes
d. watercontainer fitted
e. holds a separate board to tape you watercolor paper on, this board allows you to move your paper from landscape
to portrait and the other way around... consider making an extra board for half size watercolor sheets (50x35cm) which
fit this easel perfectly and allows for bigger paintings!
The image below shows the end result with the Watercolor Easel mounted on my Gizzo Tripod (extremely light weight
and strong tripod!)....

I started out cutting a piece of
board that would comfortable fit a quarter size watercolor sheet
(30x40cm). On the
back of the board I mounted the fitting for my tripod and, as you can see, I mounted the fitting slightly off centre in
order to compensate later for the weight of the watercontainer and palette tray.

The palette tray is
attached using only one angle to the watercolor board. I like to work
on this angle, but it is personal..
if you want a different angle or no angle at all (preferring to work flat, for example).... you have to design/adjust your
own connection between tray and board.

I made sure to leave some room to hang
my watercontainer. A rail-hook seems to work fine... Bring a few spare
ones
along when you travel... trust me. I also provided a few holes for some straps that I use to put the easel together with
a folder for my watercolor paper and the separate watercolor board.

The palette tray
below is in
full operation... as you can tell. I bought a nice little painting
palette to go
with my brand
new Watercolor Easel! Tip: check out Holbein's metal palettes, I love 'm... I used to work with plastic ones but now
- after some travelling - I'm hooked on it. It is stronger then anything plastic I tried before...

After applying some
black paint to the easel it looks as if you could
buy it from
the nearest art supply store....!
